Up to three generations in a year and on the wing from May to early September. This species is a serious pest of orchards and has been taken in all traps during the flight period. Not an uncommon species.
Larvae feed on commercially and wild grown fruit species.

A univoltine species found on woodland margins here at Las Descargues. It is on the wing from June to August and comes occasionally to light. It has been recorded from all garden and outlying traps.
Larvae feed on groundsel, ragwort and plantains.

A moth that has been illustrated before this year but is included again for reasons of abundance. The species has been increasing in numbers over the last six years and this year, despite the appalling weather, is very numerous. I have looked for evidence of breeding on all the named foodplants but to date have failed miserably.

Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing
Wingspan: 50-58mm
A beautifully marked and very fresh male of this univoltine species which is on the wing from June to September. It comes readily to light and has been recorded from all traps. The lighter female bears a resemblance to the Mediterranean species tirrenica which also occurs here.
Larvae feed on a variety of plants, blackthorn, sallow, dock and many others.
